Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras will feature the first-ever rollercoaster at sea when she debuts in 2020, offering guests a unique, open-air thrill ride aboard the cruise line’s newest and most innovative ship.
The adrenaline-rushing attraction will reach speeds of up to 40mph, complete nearly 800 feet of twists and turns and allow guests a brand new way to experience the breath-taking views available at sea.
The coaster is built by Munich-based Maurer Rides and named BOLT: The Ultimate Sea Coaster. Marking a cruise industry first, BOLT is an all-electric roller coaster which allows two riders to race along in a motorcycle-like vehicle on a track 187 feet above sea level. The ride commences with an action-packed launch where riders accelerate around the iconic Carnival funnel. Rider’s can even clock their top speeds at the end of the ride with these posted after the race – there is even a photo taken during the ride for a memorable keepsake of your experience.
President of Carnival Cruise Line, Christine Duffy said:
“Mardi Gras will be our most innovative ship ever with some truly special features and attractions, highlighted by BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea,” said Duffy. “BOLT will continue the tradition of Carnival providing exciting new ways for our guests to ‘Choose Fun.’ We are so thrilled to introduce this one-of-a-kind, game-changing, exhilarating attraction – our guests are going to love it!”
Come 2020, Mardi Gras will be based in Port Canaveral, which will feature a new state-of-the-art terminal. More information on her itineraries will be revealed next month, alongside additional information on her other groundbreaking features throughout the year.
Carnival Cruise Line has also announced that a sister-ship to Mardi Gras, and the second in the XL-Class, will start construction in 2020 to be delivered in 2022 – marking the 50th anniversary of the cruise line’s founding.

The BOLT sounds like a great idea and I am sure it will be popular with the adrenaline junkies out there. However compared to the massive structures securing land based rollercoasters the photos/artist impressions the supports look to be very light weight!
